Reading and Phonics
Our pupils will develop a life-long love of reading and will be prepared for life as successful and socially responsible citizens. They will be inspired by a rich and varied literary heritage and will read widely and often. They will appreciate the work of different authors, poets and illustrators.
Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world.
We explicitly teach the core reading skills that children need (improving vocabulary, inferring, predicting, analysing, empathising explanation, retrieval, summarising) through whole class lessons. Explicitly teaching the key reading skills means that children have a good understanding of how writers make choices to have a specific effect on the reader, which in turn transfers into their writing. Each class reads a rich, class text which is linked to their Learning Journey.
